COLORADO GUIDE 02

Required Auto Insurance & Minimum Limits in Colorado

Colorado requires complying motor-vehicle liability insurance for vehicles operated on public highways. The statutory floor does not establish the maximum insurance available after a serious crash.

Key principle. Minimum liability limits are only a statutory floor. A serious-crash coverage investigation should identify the actual policy, every insured, every responsible vehicle and every additional commercial, employer, umbrella, excess or first-party layer that may apply.

What to verify after a crash

  • Confirm the actual underwriting insurer, policy period, insured vehicle and liability limits.
  • Review Colorado compulsory-insurance and financial-responsibility statutes, including C.R.S. §§ 10-4-619, 10-4-620 and related Title 42 provisions.
  • Investigate owner, employer, commercial, umbrella and excess coverage rather than stopping at the insurance card.
  • Separate proof of insurance from proof of actual coverage for the loss.

Do not stop at the insurance card. The card may identify one policy, but it does not establish whether other owner, household, employer, commercial, umbrella, excess, UM/UIM or other coverage exists.
