Iowa Government Vehicle Crashes & Public Entity Claims
Claims involving Iowa state or local-government vehicles can be governed by special statutes, administrative procedures, notice rules, immunities and limitations that do not apply to ordinary private defendants.
- Identify whether the driver was a state employee, municipal employee, county employee or other public actor.
- For claims against the State of Iowa, review the Iowa Tort Claims Act, Iowa Code chapter 669, including administrative claim and limitation provisions.
- For municipalities and other local entities, identify the separate statute governing that entity and any insurance or immunity provisions.
- Preserve agency records, vehicle data, dispatch records and notice documentation immediately.
