IOWA GUIDE 06
Iowa Stacking & Multiple Insurance Policies
Iowa Code § 516A.2 governs recovery when more than one motor-vehicle policy provides uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run motorist coverage. The statute limits recovery to the highest single applicable limit and directs payment according to policy priority provisions, rather than allowing unrestricted addition of multiple policy limits.
- Identify every policy that may insure the injured person.
- Determine the highest single applicable UM/UIM limit.
- Read policy priority clauses together with Iowa Code chapter 516A.
- Do not assume multiple premiums automatically permit multiple limits to be added together.
