MICHIGAN AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE

Michigan PIP Benefits, Priority, Medical Expenses & Reimbursement

Michigan PIP pays allowable expenses and other statutory no-fault benefits without regard to fault, subject to the PIP medical option selected, eligibility rules, priority statutes, exclusions and policy terms. Determining the correct PIP insurer can be as important as determining the benefit amount.

  • Identify the injured person’s own policy and household policies before moving through the statutory order of priority.
  • Review MCL 500.3114 and related provisions for occupants, non-occupants, employer-provided vehicles and other special circumstances.
  • Track medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services and other claimed benefits with a complete payment ledger.
  • Preserve explanations of benefits, denials, provider balances, health-plan coordination issues and reimbursement or subrogation notices.
  • Coordinate PIP benefits with tort damages, UM/UIM and health coverage without duplicating the same loss.
