MICHIGAN AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE
Michigan Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Michigan does not require uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage in every auto policy. UM/UIM is generally optional and contractual, so recovery depends heavily on the policy language actually purchased, insured status, limits, exclusions, offsets and notice requirements.
- Obtain every declarations page and UM/UIM endorsement that may apply.
- Identify each person who qualifies as an insured under each policy.
- Review household, resident-relative, occupancy, owned-but-not-insured-vehicle and consent-to-settle provisions.
- Do not execute a liability release until its effect on any UM/UIM claim has been evaluated.
