MINNESOTA GUIDE 21
Minnesota PIP, Medical Expenses, Priority & Reimbursement
Minnesota’s no-fault system provides basic economic-loss benefits, commonly called PIP, regardless of fault. Minn. Stat. § 65B.44 requires at least $40,000 per injured person, consisting of $20,000 for medical expense loss and $20,000 for income loss, replacement services, funeral expense and survivor economic-loss benefits.
- Identify the correct no-fault insurer and priority source before assuming the occupied vehicle’s policy controls.
- Track medical expense, wage loss, replacement services and other claimed benefits with a complete payment ledger.
- Preserve applications, bills, explanations of benefits, denials, provider balances and reimbursement or subrogation notices.
- Distinguish first-party PIP benefits from third-party tort damages and UM/UIM recovery.
- Observe claim-submission deadlines and cooperate with reasonable proof requirements under the statute and policy.
