NORTH CAROLINA AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE

Required Auto Insurance & 50/100/50 Minimum Limits in North Carolina

For North Carolina motor-vehicle liability policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, the statutory minimum liability limits are $50,000 for bodily injury to one person, $100,000 for bodily injury to two or more persons in one accident, and $50,000 for property damage.

  • Confirm the policy period: older policies may have been written under the former 30/60/25 minimums until renewal.
  • Current North Carolina policies also include mandatory UM and UIM coverage subject to G.S. 20-279.21.
  • Investigate household, employer, commercial, umbrella and excess coverage when additional policies may apply.
