NORTH DAKOTA GUIDE 02
Required Auto Insurance & Minimum Limits in North Dakota
North Dakota requires liability insurance together with uninsured motorist, underinsured motorist, and basic no-fault coverage. The North Dakota Insurance Department currently identifies minimum liability limits of $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage; uninsured motorist limits of $25,000/$50,000; underinsured motorist coverage equal to the uninsured motorist coverage; and $30,000 of basic no-fault benefits per person.
- Confirm the declarations page, covered vehicle and actual liability limits; statutory minimums are only the starting point.
- Identify mandatory UM/UIM and basic no-fault benefits, plus any optional higher limits.
- Investigate owner, household, employer, commercial, umbrella and excess coverage when the facts support additional policies.
- Do not treat minimum financial-responsibility limits as a cap on the insurance actually available for a serious crash.
