SOUTH DAKOTA GUIDE 02
Required Auto Insurance & Minimum Limits in South Dakota
South Dakota’s financial-responsibility law requires minimum liability protection of $25,000 for bodily injury or death to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury or death to two or more persons in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. These are minimum limits, not a ceiling on the insurance that may apply to a serious crash.
- Confirm the declarations page, insured vehicle and actual liability limits.
- Identify uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage required under South Dakota law.
- Investigate owner, employer, commercial, umbrella and excess policies when the facts suggest additional coverage.
- Preserve policy forms and endorsements; restrictive endorsements can materially affect who is insured and at what limits.
