LOUISIANA AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE
Required Auto Insurance & Minimum Limits in Louisiana
Louisiana requires compulsory motor-vehicle liability security. For ordinary private-passenger vehicles, the statutory minimum liability limits remain $15,000 for bodily injury to one person, $30,000 for bodily injury to two or more persons in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
- Confirm the declarations page, covered vehicle and actual liability limits.
- Louisiana UM/UIM bodily-injury coverage generally follows statutory default rules unless the named insured properly rejects it, selects lower limits or selects economic-only coverage on the prescribed form.
- For an uninsured owner or operator, R.S. 32:866 now generally prevents recovery of the first $100,000 of bodily injury damages and first $100,000 of property damage, subject to statutory exceptions.
- Investigate household, employer, commercial, umbrella and excess coverage when the facts support additional policies.
