Maryland Enhanced UIM, Traditional UIM & Multiple Policies

Maryland distinguishes traditional underinsured motorist coverage from enhanced underinsured motorist coverage. For qualifying private-passenger policies issued on or after July 1, 2024, enhanced UIM generally applies unless affirmatively waived in writing, and it is not reduced by the tortfeasor’s liability payment in the same way as traditional offset-style UIM.

  • Identify the policy issue or renewal date.
  • Determine whether enhanced UIM applies or was validly waived.
  • Review every applicable policy and other-insurance provision.
  • Distinguish enhanced-UIM benefits from traditional offset calculations.
