MONTANA GUIDE 02
Required Auto Insurance & Minimum Limits in Montana
Montana requires owners and operators of motor vehicles to maintain liability insurance or another authorized form of financial responsibility. Minimum limits are a statutory floor, not a measure of the losses that can follow a serious crash.
Core questions after a crash
- What liability limits were in force on the date of loss?
- Was the vehicle insured under a personal, commercial, employer, rental, rideshare, or umbrella policy?
- Do additional insureds or additional policies apply?
- Are there excess or umbrella limits beyond the declarations page first produced?
For serious injuries, never treat the minimum-limit policy as the end of the coverage investigation. The practical task is to identify every policy and every insured relationship that may respond to the occurrence.
