NEW JERSEY AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE
Required Auto Insurance & 35/70/25 Minimum Limits in New Jersey
For New Jersey Standard Policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, minimum bodily-injury liability limits increased to $35,000 per person and $70,000 per accident, while the minimum property-damage limit remains $25,000. New Jersey’s Basic Policy follows a different statutory structure and should not be treated as equivalent to a Standard Policy.
- Confirm whether the policy is Standard, Basic or Special before analyzing available coverage.
- For Standard Policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, use the 35/70/25 minimum framework.
- Review PIP, UM/UIM and tort-option elections separately from liability limits.
- Investigate employer, commercial, umbrella and excess coverage when additional policies may apply.
