UTAH GUIDE 21
Utah PIP, Medical Expenses, Liens & Reimbursement
Utah requires personal injury protection benefits. Under Utah Code § 31A-22-307, the minimum PIP medical-expense coverage is not less than $3,000 per person for reasonable and necessary qualifying medical services. The statute also provides specified wage-loss, household-services, funeral/burial/cremation and death benefits, subject to statutory conditions and exclusions.
- Identify the applicable PIP policy and the complete schedule of available benefits.
- Track medical expenses, wage loss, household-services loss and other covered benefits separately.
- Preserve payment ledgers, explanations of benefits, liens and reimbursement notices.
- Identify coordination, subrogation and reimbursement issues before settlement.
- Distinguish PIP benefit claims from third-party tort damages and from the separate § 31A-22-309 noneconomic-damages threshold.
