GEORGIA AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE
Georgia Add-On vs Reduced-By UM/UIM & Multiple Policies
Georgia’s UM/UIM statute permits materially different coverage structures. Under the default add-on form, UM/UIM coverage applies in addition to available liability insurance, subject to the insured’s total damages. An insured may instead elect reduced-by coverage, which treats the tortfeasor’s available liability coverage as reducing the UM/UIM limit.
- Obtain and compare every UM/UIM election form and declarations page.
- Determine whether each policy provides add-on or reduced-by coverage.
- Identify all household, employer and other policies under which the injured person may qualify as an insured.
- Analyze stacking, priority and anti-duplication rules only after classifying each policy’s UM/UIM form.
