Iowa’s current liability floor is 20 / 40 / 15

Iowa Code § 321A.1(11) defines the current minimum financial-responsibility amounts as $20,000 for bodily injury or death to one person, $40,000 for bodily injury or death to two or more people in one accident, and $15,000 for property damage. Those figures are a statutory floor, not a valuation of a serious injury claim. Obtain the declarations page and complete accident-date policy before treating the available liability insurance as known.

UM and UIM are separate statutory protections

Iowa Code § 516A.1 generally requires qualifying automobile liability policies to include uninsured, hit-and-run, and underinsured motorist bodily-injury coverage at least at the § 321A.1 minimums unless the named insured signs a written rejection. Request the actual rejection/election record whenever a carrier says either coverage is absent.

A minimum-limit policy may be only one layer

Identify the driver, vehicle owner, household members, employer/business connections and umbrella/excess possibilities. Keep liability limits separate from UM/UIM, MedPay or other first-party benefits. An insurance card can identify a policy lead without establishing the full coverage architecture.

Build one coverage inventory before settlement

For each policy lead, record insurer, named insured, vehicle, policy number, effective dates, liability limits, UM/UIM status, rejections and unresolved exclusions. Do not equate the statutory minimum with the amount collectible from every responsible person or policy.
