Insured status is coverage-specific

Section 516A.1 protects persons insured under the policy

Iowa’s UM/UIM statute requires protection for persons insured under the qualifying policy unless coverage was rejected. The statute does not make every occupant or household member an insured automatically. Apply the policy definition to residence, relationship, occupancy, permission and vehicle-use facts.

Household and vehicle-use evidence can be decisive

Preserve residence records, ownership, permission communications, frequency of vehicle use and the reason for the trip when insured status is contested. Ask the carrier to identify the exact definition or exclusion and the facts it says trigger that language.

Clear policy text ordinarily controls
