MINNESOTA GUIDE 02
Required Auto Insurance, No-Fault/PIP & Minimum Limits in Minnesota
Minnesota requires residual liability insurance, no-fault basic economic-loss benefits, and separate uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Current minimum residual liability limits are $30,000 for bodily injury to one person, $60,000 for bodily injury to two or more persons in one accident, and $10,000 for property damage. Basic economic-loss benefits provide at least $40,000 per injured person, and minimum UM/UIM limits are $25,000/$50,000.
- Confirm liability, PIP/basic economic-loss, UM and UIM limits on every potentially applicable policy.
- Identify optional higher limits and umbrella or excess coverage.
- Separate first-party no-fault benefits from tort recovery and property-damage claims.
- Do not assume the minimum required limits represent the total insurance available after a serious crash.
