NORTH CAROLINA AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE
North Carolina Post-2025 UIM Stacking & Multiple Policies
North Carolina’s post-July 1, 2025 UIM framework distinguishes intra-policy from inter-policy aggregation. For qualifying nonfleet private-passenger coverage, a claimant insured under separate or additional policies may combine the highest applicable UIM limit under each policy. Within a single policy, UIM limits applicable to multiple insured vehicles may not be combined.
- Identify every separate policy under which the claimant qualifies as an insured.
- Do not add limits for multiple vehicles within the same policy.
- For qualifying separate nonfleet private-passenger policies, combine the highest applicable UIM limit from each policy as authorized by statute.
- Apply the same policy-by-policy analysis to current UM aggregation rules.
