Build the coverage map from the people, vehicles and trip

Identify the driver, vehicle owner, occupants, household members, employer, trip purpose and any rental, delivery or rideshare activity. Build separate lists for liability coverage and first-party benefits; insurance cards and claim numbers are leads, not the complete contract.

Use litigation discovery when pre-suit information is incomplete

Tennessee Rule of Civil Procedure 26.02 permits discovery of qualifying insurance agreements in litigation. That rule does not create a universal pre-suit disclosure duty, so unresolved coverage may require focused discovery after suit.

Separate liability coverage from first-party protection

Check every potentially applicable UM/UIM policy under §56-7-1201, together with owner, household, occupied-vehicle, employer, commercial and TNC policies. Confirm insured status, priority and limits separately under each contract.

Keep the investigation open until settlement

Maintain a written coverage log showing insurer, policy number, insured, claimed coverage, limits, documents received and unresolved questions. Do not sign a broad release while a plausible additional layer or first-party right remains unresolved.

Current-law review: October 4, 2026. Verify the accident-date policy, current primary authority, later case treatment, and claim-specific deadlines before legal reliance.

Authorities and source notes

Registry authority mapping and cited propositions reviewed October 4, 2026. Canonical source preservation and formal subsequent-history review remain maintenance items where noted.

Bottom line. Preserve Tennessee-specific liability, UM/UIM, policy, factual and current-authority issues before legal reliance.
