Arizona Auto Insurance & Crash Law Library
A public legal education library for Arizona automobile insurance and motor-vehicle crash law. Begin with the Arizona issue, trace it to current Arizona primary authority, and use the 23-guide library to investigate insurance coverage, insurer duties, liability, evidence, damages, reimbursement and settlement.
Start with Arizona law
Automobile insurance is state specific. Arizona combines mandatory financial responsibility, an offer-and-selection UM/UIM system, pure comparative negligence, generally several-only tort liability, specific MedPay reimbursement rules and a substantial body of Arizona appellate insurance law.
Arizona’s 23 published guides were completed under the first-generation Western States sequence. They remain the authoritative Arizona navigation system, and their existing URLs are preserved.
California and Colorado later established the canonical production sequence used for new state libraries. The legal questions remain comparable across states, but several guide numbers differ.
Arizona current-law snapshot
These starting points help define the Arizona system. Each remains subject to the complete statute, policy language, facts and controlling authority.
Ordinary minimum motor-vehicle liability limits under A.R.S. § 28-4009.
A.R.S. § 12-2505 proportionally reduces damages based on claimant fault.
Arizona uses the offer, selection and rejection framework of A.R.S. § 20-259.01.
Policy-based medical-payments coverage operates with Arizona’s statutory MedPay lien framework.
Arizona common law operates alongside A.R.S. § 20-461 and related regulatory authority.

What is distinctive about Arizona?
Arizona’s system contains several recurring features that deserve particular attention when investigating coverage and crash claims.
Offer, selection and stacking
Arizona requires insurers to offer UM and UIM under A.R.S. § 20-259.01. When several vehicles or policies exist, subsection (H) and Arizona Supreme Court authority make policy structure and anti-stacking language especially important.
Nonparty fault matters
Arizona uses pure comparative negligence and generally several liability. Properly disclosed nonparties can affect allocation of fault even though no judgment is entered against them in that action.
Special MedPay lien rule
A.R.S. § 20-259.01(J) creates an Arizona-specific statutory mechanism for qualifying MedPay liens involving payments above $5,000 and addresses compromise of the lien.
Statutory and common-law layers
A.R.S. § 20-461 supplies unfair-claims standards while Arizona appellate law separately governs contractual and common-law insurer good-faith duties.
Arizona stacking law deserves continuing review
Arizona’s UM/UIM stacking law has developed materially in recent years. The number of policies, vehicles, named insureds and purchasers can change the analysis.
The analysis operates alongside Franklin v. CSAA General Insurance Co., which addressed multiple UIM coverages associated with multiple vehicles insured under a single policy.

Compare Arizona with the other Western states
Arizona is one part of the 16-state Western States Law Library. Comparative research is useful, but the controlling comparison is the legal issue—not an assumption that identical guide numbers mean identical subjects.
Follow Arizona Guides 01–23
Within Arizona, use the numbers published on this state landing page. They remain the authoritative navigation sequence for Arizona’s existing guide URLs.
Match the topic first
Use the crosswalk when comparing Arizona with California, Colorado or a newly built state. Do not assume identical guide numbers identify identical subjects.
Arizona is especially useful for comparative study of UM/UIM offer and stacking architecture, nonparty fault, several liability, statutory MedPay reimbursement and the relationship between administrative claims standards and common-law insurance bad faith.

Do not let one insurance card define the case. Identify every person and entity that may be legally responsible. Find every applicable policy. Determine insured status separately for each coverage. Preserve UM/UIM rights. Allocate fault under Arizona law. Document the complete loss. Resolve reimbursement interests and settlement only after the full legal and insurance structure is visible.
