Vermont Auto Insurance & Crash Law
VictimsGuide’s Vermont library organizes the rules that matter after a serious motor-vehicle crash: compulsory liability insurance, uninsured and underinsured motorist protection, medical-payments coverage, claims handling, employer and commercial coverage, government claims, comparative negligence, damages, settlement, liens, subrogation and controlling case authority.
Vermont rules to identify early
- Minimum liability: Vermont requires at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash for bodily injury, plus $10,000 for property damage.
- UM/UIM: Vermont requires uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, including hit-and-run protection; statutory minimum bodily-injury UM/UIM limits are 50/100.
- Higher-limit matching: when liability limits exceed the statutory minimum, UM/UIM limits generally track those higher liability limits unless the policy and statute permit a lower selection.
- Comparative negligence: recovery is allowed when claimant negligence is not greater than the causal negligence of the defendant or combined defendants, with damages reduced proportionally.
- Government claims: state and municipal defendants require separate waiver, notice and immunity analysis.
Preserve the complete policy, UM/UIM forms, crash report, photographs, video and electronic evidence, and investigate household, employer, commercial, umbrella and excess coverage before executing a release.
